OUTSIDE THE BOX

Outside The Box is an example of breaking stereotype and labels related to identity. The project is focused on the idea of identity as a fluid construct not limited to societal views on gender traits; i.e. what is perceived to be 'feminine' and 'masculine'. The artist takes a definitive stance on the co-existence of 'male/female' characteristics upon a contemporary model, making a statement about the absurdity of categorization and stereotypes that are no longer valid today. The project is of a personal nature and focused on the artist's own identity- as a female within Australian culture, who subverts gender stereotype. One main theme behind this project is the use of symbols to convey juxtapositions that question the authenticity of labels and assumptions assigned simply on the grounds of a person's gender. Included in the work is the artist's signature motor-oil, derived from her culture and used as a stain to emphasize the grain of the wood, showcasing the uniquity that is found in identity.

Through this project the artist's aim is to connect to discourse surrounding perceptions of women through 'stereotypical' scopes, making comment on how they constrict and blanket the truth of a woman's identity through social expectation and pressure.
